How Many iPhones Have Been Sold? iPhone Sales and User Statistics
How many iPhones have been sold since the first model launched in 2007? And how many people own iPhones today? In this article we bring together the latest official figures from Apple and the market research firm IDC, so you get a clear picture of the size of the iPhone market. We update this article as new figures come in.
Last updated: October 2026. Sources: Apple quarterly results and IDC smartphone tracker data.
How Many iPhones Have Been Sold in Total?
Apple has sold more than 3 billion iPhones since the original iPhone launched in 2007. CEO Tim Cook announced this milestone during Apple's fiscal third-quarter earnings call in July 2025. For comparison: in 2023 the total stood at roughly 2.3 billion, which shows how many new devices still enter the market every year.
How Many iPhones Are Sold per Year?
According to preliminary IDC data, Apple shipped 247.8 million iPhones in 2025. That gave Apple a 19.7% share of a global smartphone market of about 1.26 billion devices. The fourth quarter of 2025 was especially strong, with 81.3 million iPhones shipped and a 24.2% market share, driven by the iPhone 17 line-up.
Growth continued into 2026. In the second quarter of 2026, IDC counted 55.8 million iPhone shipments, up 15.3% on the year before, while the total smartphone market shrank by 6.7%. Apple's share rose to 20.1%.
How Much Revenue Does the iPhone Generate?
The iPhone is still Apple's most important product by far.
- Fiscal year 2025 (ended September 2025): iPhone net sales of $209.6 billion, out of $416.2 billion total revenue. That is just over half of all Apple revenue.
- Fiscal year 2024: iPhone net sales of $201.2 billion, out of $391.0 billion total revenue.
- First nine months of fiscal 2026: iPhone net sales of $196.5 billion, compared with $160.6 billion in the same period a year earlier.
- Fiscal Q3 2026 (April to June 2026): iPhone net sales of $54.3 billion, up from $44.6 billion a year earlier.
How Many People Own iPhones?
Apple does not publish an exact number of iPhone users. What it does share is the size of its active installed base:
- In January 2026 Apple reported more than 2.5 billion active devices across all its products, up from 2.35 billion a year earlier.
- The last time Apple shared a separate figure for iPhones, in January 2021, it reported more than 1 billion active iPhones. Since then the total installed base has grown strongly.
So while no official count exists today, it is safe to say that well over a billion people own an iPhone. Many of them use a second-hand or refurbished device, because older iPhones stay in use long after their first owner upgrades.
Why These Numbers Matter for the Second-Hand Market
Every year hundreds of millions of new iPhones enter the market, and every upgrade cycle releases older devices back into circulation. That steady flow is what keeps the trade in used and refurbished iPhones growing:
- A large supply of used devices. With more than 3 billion iPhones sold, there is a constant stream of trade-ins and returns.
- Strong resale value. iPhones keep their value better than most smartphones, which makes them attractive for resellers.
- Price-conscious demand. Many consumers prefer a tested, recent iPhone at a lower price over a new one.
- Launch effects. New models, such as the iPhone 17 line-up, push more previous-generation devices into the wholesale market.
